I Forgive & I Am Free

by Cassandra Pereira

I forgive you.
I forgive you for who you are and
I forgive you for who you’ve been.

I forgive you because
you are an effect
of many causes
of your past and
of the past
of your ancestors.

I forgive you for your past and
I forgive your ancestors, too.

For all that is not your fault,
but happens through you,
I forgive you.

And for all that is your fault,
that we both know was wholly you,
I forgive you.

I forgive you for making mistakes.
Because I know what it is to make mistakes, too.
Making mistakes is what human beings do.
I forgive you.

I choose to forgive you,
because I choose to experience
the effects of this cause.

I choose to experience:
The effects of forgiveness:
Freedom to choose
and to control my emotions.
Freedom to choose peace.

Forgiving you allows me
to feel good.

I choose to release myself
from the chains of pain
that stretch heavy between us.

In this moment,
I release myself from this heaviness.
I set myself free to feel light.

This is my cause.
I choose to forgive you,

Because
I deserve the healing
effects of forgiveness.
I deserve the healthy
effects of forgiveness.
I deserve the happy
effects of forgiveness.

I deserve to live free from this suffering,
and, free from this suffering,
I become
better able to make
better choices.

I set you free to make better choices too.
I don’t want you to live in shame for your mistakes.
I don’t want you to live in shame.

I forgive you.

I choose to forgive because
forgiveness sets me free.

I release the chains of anger.
I release the chains of anguish.
I release the chains of guilt.
I release the chains of shame.

I set myself free from
all these chains
that only felt locked over me,
but which, in fact,
I have held on to.

In this moment,
I choose
that these chains
of cause and effect
stop with me.

I break these chain now
by completely letting go.

With full consciousness,
with the power and freedom of my will,
I begin to open my hands.

Breathing, I relax my hands.
Breathing, I relax my chest.
Breathing, I relax my jaw.
Breathing, I relax my throat.
Breathing, I relax my shoulders.

Breathing, I feel my breath
course down my arms.
I feel my breath open my hands
as soft as flower blossoms.

I hold on to nothing.

This is forgiveness.

Breathing, I feel
my hands again, mine —
I feel the weight of my hands.
I feel the strength of my hands.

I feel the power of all that my hands can create,
I feel the potential of all that my hands can hold,
Now that I’ve let go.

I forgive, and I am free.

I am free from that old story.
I am free from my role within it.

I am free to create new causes.
I am free to create new effects.

I am free, and
I am empowered.

I breathe in
this power of forgiveness.

I forgive, and I choose peace.
I forgive, and I choose a better me.
